What We Need to Build Your Custom Sunbrella® Canopy
Follow these quick steps to ensure a perfect fit:
1) Measure the radius of your frame
-
Remove your old canopy.
-
Collapse the umbrella and lay it flat on a table.
-
Hook your tape at the outer tip of one rib.
-
Run the tape along the rib, over the hub, and continue to the top dead center of the frame (the finial hole).
-
This distance is the radius (half of your umbrella’s true diameter).
Tip: If you prefer video guidance, use the “How to Measure Radius” video on this page (when available).
2) Count the ribs
-
Most frames have 8 ribs; some have 6 ribs.
-
We offer canopies for the popular 8-rib style and select 6-rib options.
3) Choose the center opening (grommet) size
Your canopy’s center opening allows the finial to secure the canopy to the frame.
-
Common options: ½″, 1″, or 1½″ (size refers to the hole diameter, not the outer ring).
-
Some original makers stitch a reinforced opening instead of a metal grommet—either style functions the same.
4) Select your Sunbrella® fabric
-
List prices apply to Sunbrella® 5400 Series (furniture/upholstery grade).
-
Example of a list-price fabric: Canvas Pacific Blue 5401.
-
Not included at list price: awning/marine grades like Pacific Blue 4601.
-
Upholstery-grade Sunbrella® is soft, supple, and stretches nicely across opened frames while still providing the 5-year minimum fade warranty.
-
Browse the Sunbrella® showroom online (when using their filters, deselect “umbrella” which is often checked by default) and note the product name + item number for ordering.

FAQs (Sunbrella® Replacement Canopies)
What’s the difference between 5400 (upholstery) and 4600 (awning) series?
5400-series is furniture/upholstery grade—softer hand, better stretch and drape for umbrella frames, and eligible at our list pricing. 4600-series is awning/marine grade (coarser); it is not included at list price.
Will my finial still work?
Yes. Select the center opening (½″, 1″, or 1½″) to match your finial hardware so the canopy centers correctly.
I’m not sure whether I have 6 or 8 ribs.
Count the number of ribs that radiate from the hub. If you’re unsure, text a quick photo to 480-600-1049 and we’ll confirm.
How long until it ships?
